USCG receives emergency beacon alert off MA coast

(User Submitted) – BOSTON – The USCG began searching for the NJ-based 140' fishing vessel, Retriever, and its crew off the coast of Rockport, Mass., after receiving an alert from the boat’s 406 MHz EPIRB on board the at 5:15 a.m., Monday, 11/08/10.

The USCG command center directed two 47' boat crews, an MH60 Jayhawk helicopter crew and a Falcon jet crew, and the 210' Coast Guard cutters Reliance and Vigorous as well as the 110' Grand Isle to begin a search for the Cape May, NJ, crew.

Subsequently, the vessel's master stated a large wave came over the side of the vessel and set off the boat’s emergency position indicating radio beacon (EPRIB). The boat also suffered a loss of generator power, limiting the crew’s ability to communicate. The vessel and crew are returning to port. Read the full article.
