Lady Gaga, says Billboard

(NEWSER) - Lady Gaga was Billboard ’s top new artist last year, and this year she’s moved on to snag the top artist-of-the-year honors. That’s the fastest any woman has moved from one category to the other since Whitney Houston managed the feat in 1985-86. (Chris Brown managed to snag both titles simultaneously, in 2006.) Barbara's top picks for 2009 also include Glenn Beck, Jenny Sanford

(NEWSER) - Barack Obama, Barbara Walters’ most fascinating person of 2008, was succeeded this year by…his wife, Michelle. Walters named the first lady her top pick during last night’s ABC special, which also included interviews with the rest of the top 10. Obama discussed the “amazing whirlwind” of life in the White House, the importance of her healthy kids campaign, her guilty pleasures (“really bad TV”), and—of course—how she keeps up those toned arms. Britney secures her comeback with seven nods

(NEWSER) - Beyoncé and Lady Gaga lead the pack with nine MTV Video Music Award nominations each, People reports. E! adds another notable: Britney Spears, with seven. The awards are set for Sept. 13. Elsewhere:

• One of the two police chiefs charged with breaking into the home of Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker’s surrogate has been placed on paid leave, the AP reports. Both cops, who are from neighboring townships, pleaded not guilty.

Jennifer Lopez manages comeback to top annual list

(NEWSER) - Jennifer Lopez went from superstar to has-been … and has now apparently swung back to superstar. The American Idol judge tops the latest Celebrity 100, Forbes ’ annual list of the stars with the most money and fame , with $52 million in earnings over the past year. In addition to her new Idol gig, she’s gotten quite a bit of publicity thanks to her divorce, big endorsement deals, a clothing line and fragrance, and tons of fans and followers on social media.
