Girardi Accepts 3-Year Offer to Manage Yanks

Posted Oct 30, 07 9:32 PM CDT in Sports    Most Covered

(Newser) – Joe Girardi has agreed to a three-year, $6 million contract to accept the unenviable task of succeeding Joe Torre, and his four championships, as the Yankees manager. Girardi is no slouch in the hardware department, however. He won three championships as a player for the Yankees and was the 2006 NL Manager of the Year for Florida, reports the AP.

Girardi, who said he was thrilled to be offered the job, left the Marlins after his only year there because of clashes with ownership. He spent the past season as a television announcer. The ex-catcher beat out Yankees hero and fan-favorite Don Mattingly for the position in pinstripes. “He's got a feel for this organization,” Torre said of Girardi.
