(User Submitted) – The USCG encourages owners and operators who have vessels at anchor or moored to piers to conduct preventative maintenance in advance of severe winter weather conditions. Snow and ice accumulation on a vessel can directly affect its stability.

Pollution caused by boats sinking could potentially result in fines and additional salvage costs. A civil penalties amounting to thousands of dollars PER DAY are possible.

To prevent the sinking of a vessel the USCG recommends:

- Removal of snow and ice accumulation including keeping scuppers clear of blockage.
- Performing routine checks for signs of leaks.
- Conducting a routine inspection of your automatic bilge pump.
- Visually inspecting all thru-hull fittings for damage or loose connections.
- think ahead. Read the full article.
