Pistole: No Body Cavity Searches on My Watch

Nation can breathe a sigh of relief on that point, at least

(Newser) – Concerned that body cavity searches are the inevitable next frontier in the TSA's war against terrorism? Don't be—at least not as long as John Pistole is around. USA Today had a long chat with the TSA chief and he revealed that, though current technology can't detect explosives hidden inside a body cavity, body cavity searches aren't next: "Not on my watch. We are at the most thorough that we will probably be in terms of our physical screening."

Of course, that means that when it comes to explosives hidden inside the body, "we can't eliminate that risk, frankly," he said. Other nuggets: He is hopeful that one day we will be able to wear our shoes or take a water bottle through security, and he says that TSA screeners have the room to use common sense when it comes to who gets randomly selected for extra screening. If, say, an old lady happens to be the 10th person and should be selected, "I would hope ... I'd go to number 11" instead.

"....he says that TSA screeners have the room to use common sense when it comes to who gets randomly selected for extra screening." Sure, they have the room to USE common sense, but unfortunately, they don't HAVE any common sense. Several years ago a TSA agent was flummoxed by my daughter's headgear. What kind of adult has gone through life without ever seeing headgear, not even in training, not even as a joke in the movies or on TV? Apparently the extremely sheltered kind that gets hired by the TSA. Even when given the ability to skip over passengers for whom extra screening is difficult and/or almost certainly unnecessary, these are not people with the capacity to make those kinds of determinations.

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula already used a butthole bomb to try to kill a Saudi prince. Now with Pistole's comment, they have confirmation on the way to attack American aviation. All the scans and gropes won't matter. Buy a round trip ticket, carry luggage, plan to go to a specific case, and you're in. The ease of this scheme is demoralizing. And just what good do the random searches after security do now anyway? I think they never did make much sense anyway, but now with the super-thorough primary screening the secondary random searches are equivalent to just sending someone back trough the line again. Is anyone in charge here? It looks like a committee of corporate lawyers wrote American security plans. It is a hodgepodge of reactions to the attacks that have already occurred.

Pistole said No Body Cavity Searches on My Watch, unless he's cute! Don't touch my junk!
