So Long? Schilling Files for Free Agency

(Newser) – On the same day that duck boats paraded the World Series champion Red Sox around Boston the team’s veteran hurler, Curt Schilling, filed for free agency. Schilling was part of two championship teams in Boston, including the club’s first in 86 years, but told a radio audience that his return to the team is unlikely, reports the Boston Globe. He named 12 other teams he'd consider joining.

Schilling is seeking a one-year deal, but his anticipated eight-figure price tag for that may be too high for the Red Sox, especially considering the club’s depth in starting pitching. Another free agent concern for Boston is World Series MVP Mike Lowell. Bringing Lowell back is apparently important to team captain Jason Varitek: he held a sign reading “Re-sign Lowell” during the parade.
