YouTube is trying to snap up the video production company that supplied its two biggest hits of the year, insiders say. New York-based Next New Networks, producer of the Bed Intruder Song that racked up 60 million views this year, scouts new video creators and helps them find an audience and make money. The acquisition would be YouTube's first major step into creating original content, the New York Times notes.
Next New Networks—which bills itself as "TV for the Internet"—operates 16 different channels, with most of its videos being created by its huge network of independent filmmakers. "It's a bet by YouTube on alternative, independently produced video," an online video industry analyst tells the Los Angeles Times. "YouTube is saying that online video isn't just about Hollywood.
