Caught in Mexico, she was having affair with 13-year-old, police say

(Newser) – A 25-year-old female math teacher who allegedly ran off to Mexico with a 13-year-old former student was arrested today, the AP reports. The boy has been turned over to his relatives. The two, who met when she taught him sixth-grade math at a Nebraska middle school, headed for the border when police began investigating a romantic affair between them, authorities say.

Teacher Kelsey Peterson, 25, is in FBI custody and faces federal charges including transporting a minor across state lines for sexual activity. Mexican authorities caught them after Peterson's license plate was photographed at the border. Police have recovered several emails and letters in which the couple professed their love for each other.

But experts say they are not likely to work

(NEWSER) - With kidnappings up 317% over the last five years—not to mention the disturbing fact that more than 20% of the crimes have allegedly involved police officers or soldiers—scared Mexicans are increasingly turning to a controversial method of protecting themselves: tracking devices. For $2,000 upfront and an additional $2,000 per year, one company will implant a radio-frequency identification chip under the skin, which in turn relays a signal to a GPS device held outside the body. Sales are up 40% over the past two years, says a Xega executive, who claims that clients can still be found even without the GPS unit—and says 178 people have been retrieved over the last 10 years. Seventeen have been arrested in connection

(NEWSER) - Mexican authorities yesterday found 28 more bodies in the mass graves discovered in Tamaulipas last week , bringing the total number to 116. Seventeen people have been arrested in connection with the grisly uncovering. Most of the victims, believed to be kidnapped bus passengers , are probably Mexican, officials say, but few have been identified and at least one is Guatemalan. More»

(NEWSER) - More sad news from Mexico: The parents of 25 children found abandoned in a Mexican border city on Monday were likely kidnapped, according to an official. The eight boys and 17 girls, who reportedly range from a few months in age to 10 years old, were found wandering the streets of Nuevo Laredo, which is just across the border from Laredo, Texas. The official told local media yesterday that police have "evidence that indicates that their parents were kidnapped and that was the reason they were abandoned." Prez candidate Diego Fernandez de Cevallos' captors still at large

(NEWSER) - Former Mexican presidential candidate Diego Fernandez de Cevallos was freed yesterday, 7 months after kidnappers snatched him from his ranch north of Mexico City. The 69-year-old political heavyweight known as "El Jefe" didn't give reporters any details of his months in captivity. He said that, as a man of faith, he has forgiven his abductors but as a citizen, he wants authorities to catch them, the Los Angeles Times reports. More»
