Hoping perhaps to gloss over its recent black eyes, Toyota today burnished its crown jewel, unveiling an expanded Prius line with something for, well, more than just your devout tree-hugger. The automaker is continuing the standard Prius, reports the LA Times, and will also offer:

  • The Prius V: A station wagon with 50% more cargo room that it trades for diminished gas mileage of 40mpg. On sale this summer.
  • The Prius C: This pint-sized Prius is geared toward city driving and looks to far exceed the 50mpg of the standard model. On sale in 2012.
  • A plug-in Prius: The twin of the standard model looks to go about 13 miles on a charge before switching to gas. On sale in early 2012.

Experts approve: "It is incredibly dominant," says one. "Prius outsold the entire Acura and Infiniti brands." Of the 275,000 hybrids Americans brought home last year, about 140,000 were Priuses.
