Last member of sitcom family dead at 74

(Newser) – David Nelson, the last surviving family member from '50s sitcom The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, has died at the age of 74. The former child star, who directed movies including Peytyon Place, succumbed to colon cancer, AP reports. Nelson and his younger musician brother, Ricky, who died in a 1985 plane crash, grew up in front of millions of Americans as they starred in the long-running sitcom with their real-life parents.

(NEWSER) - He co-starred in more than 100 movies, notes the New York Times , and even partnered with the iconic Sgt. Joe Friday on TV's Dragnet, but the world knows him best as Col. Potter on M*A*S*H: Actor Harry Morgan, 96, died this morning at home in Los Angeles of pneumonia. Variety notes a neat bit of trivia on the role: He first appeared on the show in 1974 as a "deranged general," earned an Emmy, and impressed the producers so much they asked him to replace the departing McLean Stevenson as the unit's top officer (one who was very much not deranged). '50s screen idol loved the stage best

(NEWSER) - Soulful leading man Farley Granger, best known for his roles in Alfred Hitchcock thrillers Strangers On a Train and Rope, left the movie business twice: once to enlist in the Navy during World War II and a second time, at the height of his Hollywood success, to take acting lessons in New York and pursue stage roles. (NEWSER) - CBS today finally handed Charlie Sheen that pink slip he's been begging for over the past few weeks, reports People. "After careful consideration, Warner Bros. Television has terminated Charlie Sheen's services on Two and a Half Men effective immediately," says a statement from the network. CBS says "no decision has been made" about whether to hire a new star or cancel the show completely. Sheen, meanwhile, is busily tweeting about Tiger Blood. More»

Veteran actor Len Lesser made more than 500 TV, film appearances

(NEWSER) - Veteran character actor Len Lesser, best known for playing Jerry's eccentric Uncle Leo on Seinfeld, has died of cancer-related pneumonia at the age of 88. Lesser's 60-year TV career included parts in the Monkees, Get Smart, and the Rockford Files. Lesser, a native New Yorker and World War II vet, also appeared in films, including Kelly's Heroes and Birdman of Alcatraz, AP notes. More»
