On the Trail, Simmering Gender War Heats Up

(Newser) – That Hillary Clinton is breaking the gender barrier in the presidential primaries is not news, but fallout from last week’s Democratic debate is bringing to a head questions of how to campaign as a woman and how to campaign against one. Supporters saw discrimination even as critics accused Clinton of shielding herself with gender, the Times reports.

Former VP hopeful Geraldine Ferraro says a male candidate wouldn't have faced the blistering attacks Clinton endured last week. Kate Michelman counters that it’s “outrageous” to claim sexism in the face of tough questioning. The candidate remained neutral but did offer a loaded metaphor: “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.”
