Brains are tied with beauty, says a new study.   (Shutterstock)

(Newser) – Beautiful people really do have it all, a new study suggests: They're also more likely to be intelligent. Researchers at the London School of Economics found that intelligence correlated strongly with physical attractiveness. Men judged by others in the study as handsome had IQs 13.6 points higher than the average, while beautiful women had IQs 11.4 points above the average., the New York Daily News reports.

The effect stems from the heritability of intelligence, the researchers speculate, and the tendency of beautiful people to mate with one another: "Given that both intelligence and physical attractiveness are highly heritable," lead researcher Satoshi Kanazawa says, "there should be a positive correlation between intelligence and physical attractiveness in the children's generation." But the conclusion is "purely scientific," Kanazawa adds, and not "a prescription for how to treat or judge others."

Intelligence and beauty are both malleable, based upon how people take care of their bodies and minds. Their ability to care for themselves depends in part upon their environments and social class.

See? I pay close attention to Playboy playmates because they're SMART, not just because they're beautiful.

I've met intelligent pretty people and incorrigibly stupid, trashy beautiful people. Intellect can depend heavily on where a person is raised. I also think there is less pressure for beautiful women to develop their minds, simply because they don't need to do so to get laid. Men have a greater need to make money to attract high quality mates, not that intellect is absolutely necessary to do that, but it sure helps a person make money.
