Fox Is Turning Us Into Cynical Malcontents: NYT Editor

And we're more polarized than ever, says Bill Keller

(Newser) – America is not a pretty sight, thanks to Fox News, complains a New York Times editor. The right-wing infused programing is turning us into cynical malcontents who are more polarized than ever, explains Times executive editor Bill Keller. "The effect of Fox News on American public life has been to create a level of cynicism about the news in general. I think it's unhealthy," Keller explained in an interview at the National Press Club. "National discourse is more polarized and strident than it has been in the past, and to some extent, I would lay that at the feet of Rupert Murdoch."

I have no problem with freedom of speech, but many people have no idea how much Fox News is being forced down the throats of young, unsuspecting, easily swayed people. I live in Florida, and just about everywhere there is a TV on in public, it's tuned to Fox News. This includes Burger King, doctor's offices, hair salons etc. Many people ONLY get their news from Fox, and it's scary to think that people think this is real news! They are clearly right wingers, and that's fine if you know that . . .but what about the people who don't? Talk about a propaganda machine! SOMEONE GET ME OUT OF FLORIDA!!!!!

The best thing about this story is that one can clearly see the political slant of those who comment. Some try to pretend that they have no particular view, which is bullshit, or hide behind a coy, "independent" label. But one little piece of criticism about Faux, and people act like the first amendment is about to be stricken from the constitution.
