Iowa Sandwich Shop Fights Subway Over 'Footlong'

Even if it's 12 inches long, don't call it you-know-what

(Newser) – While Subway waits to hear whether its bid to trademark the word "footlong" is successful, it's been sending out cease-and-desist letters to sandwich shops that dare to use the phrase. Now Iowa-based Casey's is fighting back (and getting some publicity to boot), notes the Consumerist, via the Des Moines Register. The Midwest chain is challenging the sandwich giant's claim to the term and seeking unspecified damages over Subway's "frivolous" claims.

"Casey's has and will continue to use 'footlong' to describe a sandwich," says the company, which is seeking a jury trial.

I say Subway should have absolute rights over the words "foot" and "long" and "thieves". And Facebook should own the words "face" and "book" and "arrogance". And every time we use those words we should send them $10 in the post. And they should pay $1 to whoever is in Washington at the time. Its the way they want it. Let's just go with it.
