Female Vets Sue Pentagon Over Sex Abuse

Lawsuit says rape is rampant, but ignored by commanders

(Newser) – Seventeen current and former service members, all but two of them female, have filed a class-action lawsuit against the military alleging that systemic sexual abuse is rampant among the troops but ignored by commanders. "There are three types of women in the Army,” one of the female victims tells the Daily Beast. “Bitch, dyke, and whore.” The suit names defense chief Robert Gates and predecessor Donald Rumsfeld, accusing them of presiding over an institution that allows everything from verbal abuse to rape to go unpunished. As a result, victims often have to go on serving alongside their assailants.

One example cited: An Army Reservist says two male soldiers raped her in Iraq, videotaped it, and circulated the tape within the unit, reports AP. Her commander took no action because he concluded she "did not struggle enough." The lawsuit "may become a landmark case to force the military to take rape and sexual assault seriously," writes Andrea Stone at Aol News. "Or it could be yet another failed attempt in a decades-long battle by women to be accepted in the armed forces." Click for more.

This is in response to SK789 2/15.You really need an education. I was in the army. I never suffered like these women as I believe is the majority. However my daughter suffered. She did everything within her power to protect herself and stand up for herself including being stronger and tougher and the wrath that was deliverd back to her broke her. Do you always have such crap spewing from your brain? You're making yourself look like fool publicly. People are laughing at you!

My daughter is a casualty of the United States Army. She is coming home in 3 weeks with a mental discharge 2 years early with extreme mental problems and alcoholism stemming from the abuse she suffered while on active duty. She never saw action. Her enemies were her male superiors. The more she stood up for herself the more punishment she endured. Sleep deprived for a year, being called dyke, whore, and worse, daily degradation, insults to her gender and sexual attempts...harassed until they broke her. My once mentally healthy daughter joined the army to serve a country that wouldn't protect her because she is female. I am shocked and outraged. These brave women that stood up and publicly cried out against a system that turned its back on them deserve to be applauded. They are true heroes.

All the scum defending the rape and abuse of women in the armed forces, or anywhere else, should be sent immediately to a prison where they will be sharing a cell with a bunch of guys who will demonstrate just what rape is. I reckon ten years should be enough for them to get the idea.
