Chicago's Population Dips Below 1920 Level

People are leaving for suburbs, Southern US

(Newser) – Chicago's population fell 6.9% during the decade that ended in 2010, leaving it with fewer people than lived there in 1920. The US Census Bureau reports a population of 2,695,598 people, just under the 2.7 million that were reported nearly a century ago, the Wall Street Journal reports. The recession is likely to blame for a significant migration to the suburbs and the South; even so, Chicago is expected to remain the third-largest city in the nation behind New York and Los Angeles.

The Windy City's population peaked at 3.62 million in 1950, then declined for years until it experienced a boom in the 1990s. This most recent decline affected the city's black population more than most; it fell from more than 1 million to 887,608. "The black decline is really powering the city loss," says a demographer, calling it "part of the great reverse migration to the South." As Chicago's population fell, however, the population in neighboring counties surged—which could mean those traditionally conservative counties will become more politically diverse.

"Chicago's Population Dips Below 1920 Level" Of course it did. Rahm Emanuel moved back into town... "This town stinks like a whorehouse at low tide..." Sean Connery's "Malone" in "The Untouchables".

Wow Conservative Jack, you're a pretty big moron, yes? As someone who has lived in the city for 25 years, I really truly doubt black people are to blame. Perhaps it's the 10% sales tax that has driven people away. Maybe it's the severe corruption in every cornor of Chicagos political culture that drives them away. Maybe it's the privatazation of the parking meters that continue to ass rape everyone. Maybe it's the red light cameras on EVERY corner ticketing people $100 bucks a pop, a hidden tax because we are so broke. Maybe it's because the city is broke because we have family friends working county jobs that they are not qualified and make $130,000 a year off the tax payer that is driving people away. It's not black people. It's Chicago and it's citizens unwillingness to change that is driving people away. Just look at Rahm. Chicagoans are pretty dumb if they think anything will change under him. It's getting too damn expensive to live here. Your fear mongering and quickness to point a finger is what's wrong with this countrys dialog right now. And before you attack me as a "liberal", I've never voted for a liberal in my life. So please, seeing as you're from NY, not exactly paradise, don't tell us whats wrong with our city. We know whats wrong. And it's not "ni*****".
