Shawna Forde plotted home invasion turned murder

(Newser) – Shawna Forde, the self-styled border vigilante convicted in the deaths of a 9-year-old Arizona girl and her father, was sentenced to death yesterday. Forde’s attorney had asked jurors to spare Forde’s life because repeated childhood abuse had left her a “broken person,” but the DA noted that even after the shooting, Forde talked to an FBI informant about having more “targets” in mind. She joins two other women on Arizona’s Death Row, the Arizona Daily Star reports. Two others allegedly involved in the crime, including the accused gunman, go on trial in March and June.

(NEWSER) - What to do when faced with a nationwide shortage of a lethal injection drug? In Arizona's case, take the slightly sketchy step of buying it from somewhere else. The state last night executed Jeffrey Landrigan for a 1989 murder in the state's first execution since 2007—using sodium thiopental it says it got from Britain. It's the first time a state has admitted it got the drug abroad, amid speculation that it actually came from a third-world country. The state's deputy attorney general calls such claims "not accurate," though he did not name the company that manufactured it. More»

(NEWSER) - Two of three people arrested in the Arizona murder of a 9-year-old and her father were involved with a small anti-illegal immigrant group, the AP reports. Shawna Forde, the founder of Minutemen American Defense, and Jason Bush, its operations director, were charged with murder, assault, and burglary in the home invasion last month, reports the Arizona Daily Star. (NEWSER) - Ohio executed one death-row inmate yesterday and has 11 executions on the books over the next 20 months. The AP notes that could once again make the state one of the country's busiest executioners. So is all that capital punishment deterring murders there? Who knows? That's basically the finding of experts brought together to research the question on behalf of the National Research Council. NPR reports that they considered only the science, not the morality, of the death penalty, by reviewing dozens of studies on the topic. More»

Troy Davis: I Want to Take a Polygraph Test

In effort to save him, Georgia Democrats urge prison strike

(NEWSER) - Troy Davis is hours from death, but he’s not giving up. The Georgia death row inmate, who claims he was wrongly convicted of killing a police officer in 1989, wants to take a polygraph test. "Mr. Davis believes he is innocent and he wants to show it," his lawyer said late last night. Davis is not yet cleared by the Department of Corrections to take the polygraph test, but his lawyer said the legal team will be at the state prison this morning with a polygraph examiner. Davis will only take the three-hour test if the parole board will take it into consideration, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. More»
