LA restaurant owner jumps off cliff to avoid detectives

(Newser) – Police are ripping apart a restaurant in Los Angeles County looking for the body of the owner's missing wife. David Viens, who runs the Thyme Contemporary Cafe, has been arrested on suspicion of his wife's murder, the Los Angeles Times reports. Viens expanded the cafe and added new floors and walls shortly after his wife disappeared 16 months ago.

Soon after local newspaper the Daily Breeze reported that Viens was a murder suspect and blood was found on the walls of the home the couple shared, the 46-year-old restaurant owner jumped off a cliff following a police pursuit. "Mr. Viens dove off a 100-foot cliff to avoid talking to our detectives, and that is somewhat telling," said the chief investigator. Viens survived the fall.

(NEWSER) - Exactly 33 years ago today, on another Friday before Memorial Day, 6-year-old Etan Patz convinced his mother to let him walk the block and a half to his school bus stop alone, for the first time. His mother told detectives Etan had a dollar with him so he could buy a soda, and the Daily Beast points out that the bodega next to the bus stop, where Pedro Hernandez was a 19-year-old stock clerk, would have been a logical place for him to stop. The neighborhood was a gritty one at the time, and a longtime resident tells the New York Times the seedy bodega had a "hostile" feeling and was rumored to host cockfights in the basement. So why didn't investigators, knowing Hernandez worked at the store, ever interrogate him? That's the question the Daily Beast raises, though it offers no clear answers. More»

(NEWSER) - Police in Los Angeles County have the grim task of searching a landfill for the bodies of a toddler and a baby they believe were killed by their father and dumped in the trash. Investigators believe Shazer Fernando Limas stabbed his boys, a 2-year-old and a 4-month-old, to death along with their mother, Arlet Contreras, whose body was left in a gutter but not identified until it had been in the morgue for 10 days, reports the Los Angeles Times . Nicholle Coppler found in home of Glen Fryer

(NEWSER) - Police have found the skeleton of Nicholle Coppler, an Ohio girl missing since she ran away from home in 1999, officials announced this weekend. Coppler's remains were found earlier this month at the home of Glen Fryer, where she was last seen; Fryer had connections to human trafficking and killed himself in 2002 while awaiting sentencing for raping another girl, 12. "I knew in my heart she never left that house," Nicholle's mother Krista Coppler tells the Lima News , adding that she believes Nicholle wanted to come back home but Fryer held her in his house. Bodies of Missing Family Found in Hollow Tree

Lawyers for Matthew Hoffman tell police where to find bodies

(NEWSER) - The bodies of three missing people in Ohio have been found wrapped in garbage bags and stuffed into a hollow tree, MSNBC reports. Police had been on the hunt for Tina Herrmann, 32, her 10-year-old son, Kody, and a friend of Herrmann's, Stephanie Sprang, 41, since Nov. 10. They were apparently killed at Herrmann's home, investigators believe. Hermann's 13-year-old daughter, Sarah Maynard, is recuperating after being found bound and gagged in the basement of tree trimmer Matthew Hoffman, who remains in custody and charged with kidnapping.
