(Newser) – Fashion designer John Galliano has lost his job for making anti-Semitic slurs; he may now lose his freedom as well. French prosecutors have announced that Galliano will stand trial on charges of making racist insults in public, a charge that carries a maximum penalty of six months in prison and a $31,400 fine, reports Reuters. The charges relate to two incidents, one last month and one in October of last year.

The British designer, Christian Dior's creative director just days ago, was fired after a video surfaced of him making anti-Semitic remarks in a Paris bar. Galliano has since apologized and entered rehab. The House of Dior says its Paris Fashion Week catwalk show will go ahead tomorrow, despite some high-profile calls for a boycott over Galliano's behavior.

If I'd been fortunate enough to present as a friend filmed this fugly douchespatula unload on the Jews, I'd like to think I'd have had the presence of mind to weigh up the potential fee for the video and the cost of a fine for punching the twat in the face, on camera. I'd like to think that, but until he showed up in the news for this, I'd never heard of the fucking ass lozenge.

Let me first start by saying that I am greatly disturbed by the words that this man uttered, and in no way agree with him. However, what bothers me a great deal is that a person is forbidden to speak what they BELIEVE for fear of prison or fines or both. I am an American and we have the freedom of speech. It is my belief that a person can hate or love whomever they choose, and have the right to speak about their hate openly about anyone they choose. I happen to be 'white' and if someone were to look at me and say; 'I hate 'whites' I think they should all be killed, they have no right exist and in my opinion they should be wiped from the planet'. Now that person would then have to deal with me personally, but I would fight to the death for that person to have the freedom to say what they believe. Now on the other hand, if he points me out personally and slandered my good name or something like that, then he has broken the law (as this may hinder my ability to thrive and pursue happiness due to the mistrust brought about by that persons false testimony about me specifically). As for Galliano here, I think he should have been fired, but I completely disagree with him being criminally charged for stating his horrible opinions. Next they will try to imprison us for not hiring people that we find to be undesirable. Oh wait, that is already happening. Tragic (the loss of freedom). How can a person 'Face Trial for Slurs?' This is an outrage! He loves Hitler and Hates Jews. This is also an outrage! But its not criminal. It's just bad.

Entering rehab is a good start. What's even better would be a change of heart, and mind. The fundamentals of racism, and hate, will forever be in his makeup if he does anything less.
