It took a scientific study for us to understand why some girls post more photos on Facebook than others: Women who base their self worth on their appearance share more pictures online. And those photos are likely seen by more friends, as these females maintain larger social networks, too, finds a University of Buffalo study. "The results suggest persistent differences in the behavior of men and women that result from a cultural focus on female image and appearance," said lead researcher Michael A. Stefanone.

Stefanone does concede that while the results are not surprising, "It is disappointing that in the year 2011 so many young women continue to assert their self worth via their physical appearance—in this case, by posting photos of themselves on Facebook as a form of advertisement."
