Site tries to fight perception of social ineptitude

(Newser) – The University of Chicago may be known as a bastion of sexless nerd-dom, but some undergrads are changing that with UChicago Hookups, a website that allows students to meet up for, well, whatever they might have in mind. Entries read more or less like the casual-encounters section of Craigslist: people drop notes looking for casual sex, just makeouts, or even a "cuddle buddy," the Chicago Tribune reports.

So far, the site has 300 registered users, though anyone can look at posts. "We're trying to change the ages-old stereotype that UChicago students are severely sexually deprived. With that in mind, if you're looking for 'where fun comes to die,' you've come to the wrong place," according to the site. Instead, the site's tagline is "where fun comes to thrive."

One of the common University of Chicago tee-shirts has the saying "where fun comes to die." So the "where fun comes to thrive" is a play on that.

I like this post by one woman on that site... "Not entirely sure what I'm looking for... mostly just makeouts for now, possibly light groping if all goes well. Prefer something ongoing as opposed to the one-night stand variety of hookup." Wow, 1st base on a casual hookup site, pretty daring!

A Stanford sociologist who surveyed a whopping 17,000 college students since 2005 found that a hefty 24% of seniors said they were virgins. That's a percentage on the rise, reports USA Today . (NEWSER) - A 60-year-old researcher at the University of Chicago died earlier this month from an infection that may have been set off by the bacteria that causes the plague. Malcolm Casadaban was working with a weakened strain of the bacteria that is normally harmless, and the CDC has been called in to investigate why he died. The university says that there is no threat to the public but has offered antibiotics to about 100 acquaintances of the victim. More»
