(NEWSER) - The Ringling Brothers circus—without admitting wrongdoing—has paid $270,000 to settle federal accusations that it mistreated elephants, tigers, zebras, and other exotic animals. Federal inspectors found that a sick elephant was forced to perform, elephants' faces were cut by sharp edges in transport trailers, big cats were kept in rusty cages with splintered floors, and meat was delivered to tigers in the same wheelbarrows that their waste was hauled in, MSNBC reports. (NEWSER) - A Ringling Brothers elephant collapsed as she was being loaded onto a circus train, triggering cries of abuse. The spectacle in Anaheim was captured on film by animal rights activists who were keeping an eye on circus activities. Circus spokesmen claimed that 54-year-old Asian elephant Sarah merely tripped and was uninjured, reports the Huffington Post. But Sarah is suffering from a difficult-to-treat-infection, according to circus records, and she is seriously ill, said a spokesman for Animal Defender International. More»

Tom Otterness, who shot dog for film, now in $750K public art deal

(NEWSER) - An artist who shot dead a dog for an "art film" has been commissioned to create new sculptures that could end up at a Manhattan public library branch—and New Yorkers are rabid about it. Brooklyn sculptor Tom Otterness adopted a small black-and-white dog from a Brooklyn shelter in 1977, chained it to a fence and shot it while it was being filmed. The pup's slow death was shown repeatedly as part of Otterness's subsequent "Shot Dog Film" exhibit. The artist, known for his bulbous-headed animal and people sculptures, has been paid $750,000 for lion sculptures by an anonymous donor who now wants to donate them to the Battery Park City branch of the New York Public Library. Puppies Left to Die in Suitcase Reunited

Seven survived cupboard ordeal

(NEWSER) - Newborn puppies locked in a suitcase and left to die in a cupboard have been reunited big, happy, and healthy. It was too late to save five of the black-and-white mixed breed pups when British animal control officers discovered them in a breeder's home. But seven survivors were nursed back to health and adopted by loving homes, and the new owners held a reunion party, reuniting the dogs for the first time since their ordeal more than two years ago. The breeder has been banned from ever owning animals, and was sentenced to 20 weeks in prison, reports the Telegraph . More»
