(Newser) – A Berkshire Hathaway executive once seen as the likeliest successor to billionaire investor Warren Buffett has abruptly resigned. David Sokol—who ran Berkshire subsidiaries including MidAmerican Energy and NetJets—says he is quitting to devote more time to philanthropy. His resignation, however, comes amid controversy over Sokol's acquisition of thousands of shares in a company soon before Berkshire entered talks to buy the company at his suggestion, the New York Times notes.

"Neither Dave nor I feel his Lubrizol purchases were in any way unlawful,” Buffett said in a statement. “He has told me that they were not a factor in his decision to resign.” Buffett says he learned earlier this month that Sokol bought almost 100,000 shares in chemical company Lubrizol a week before he recommended that Berkshire make an offer for the company. It's unclear whether Sokol will face any legal repercussions over the deal.

I'm just totally shocked. It looked until a few minutes ago as if he was the guy. - Andy Kilpatrick, stockbroker and author of Of Permanent Value,

Buffet would prosecute him but it would bring more bad publicity on Berkshire Hathaway. It's like banks when they realize they've been scammed: they're hush hush about the losses.

“He has told me that they were not a factor in his decision to resign.” Lets see what type of idiot Warren really is if he believes this statement from Sokol. There are so many of this kind out there from Wall Street, to the Bord Rooms and the White House, none of them are any different, they all believe they are above the common person and the law. What the USA might need is a good route like in 1792 France, at least in certain sectors, it seems that is the only way some of these people get the picture as they certainly do not know or respect history.
