Tigers Deepen OF, Pick Up Jacque Jones

Posted Nov 13, 07 12:05 AM CST in Sports    Most Covered

(newser) – The busy Detroit Tigers picked up another left-handed bat, acquiring outfielder Jacque Jones from the Chicago Cubs yesterday for Omar Infante. Jones, a nine-year vet, is expected to be the main left fielder but could also spell stars Curtis Granderson and Magglio Ordonez, reports the Associated Press. Jones, set to make $5.5 million, has four seasons of 20-plus home runs.

Add this move to the re-signing of closer Todd Jones and trade for shortstop Edgar Renteria and the Tigers appear to have filled several holes for 2008. Infante, who played for Cubs bench coach Alan Trammell when he managed Detroit, gives Chicago much-needed versatility, playing both infield and outfield. Tigers manager Jim Leyland praised Infante and called it a good trade for both teams.
