Detroit Re-Signs Closer Jones for 1-year $7 Million

(newser) – After young flamethrower Joel Zumaya seriously injured his shoulder moving boxes in the recent California wildfires, the Tigers needed to find a closer. Fortunately, Todd Jones was willing to re-sign with the team. With Zumaya out until mid-season the club offered Jones, who saved 75 games over the past two seasons, a one-year, $7 million contract, reports the Detroit News.

Jones, who turns 40 in April, is an effective right-handed closer who has a knack for getting out of tough situations; unfortunately he is usually the one who creates those situations. "The Rollercoaster,” as former Tigers announcer Ernie Harwell dubbed him, has 301 career saves. He’s pitched for Houston, Detroit, Minnesota, Colorado, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Florida and Detroit again.
