California Gov. Jerry Brown might have a reputation as a slightly whacked-out lefty, but he apparently packs heat occasionally—just like his more conservative countrymen. Brown revealed before a slightly stunned press corps that he owns not one, but three, guns. He divulged no other facts, and his spokeswoman declined to discuss "the governor's arsenal in detail." Word is that he uses the guns for target practice. He casually made his revelation speaking before a meeting of the Alliance of California Law Enforcement.

He was defending his plan to transfer thousands of felons from state prisons to country jails to save money, a measure that has become known as the "get a dog, buy a gun" bill because the citizenry would presumably have to start protecting itself if the plan goes through. Not only is Brown already gunned up, he also pointed out that he owns a dog, a small corgi named Sutter, which is "not much of a security asset," quips the Los Angeles Times.
