The US Coast Guard suspended its search for a missing man at 7:49 p.m. Saturday. Missing is Christopher Panchyshyn, 28, from Richmond, Va.
After transiting out of Oregon Inlet, the crew of the unnamed vessel determined that the sea was too rough for them. As the vessel came about, three of the four crewmembers were ejected from the boat when it was struck by a swell. The boat’s operator was able to recover two but the third was unresponsive, unable to assist in his own recovery. Subsequently while trying to recover the 3rd crewman, the crew lost sight of the 28-year-old male. The crew also reported that the missing boater was not wearing a personal floatation device.
Within minutes of receiving the emergency call, the USCG dispatched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Elizabeth City and two 47-foot Motor Life Boat crews from Station Oregon Inlet and searched approximately 76 square miles over an 11-hr period. Ocean Rescue crews from Nags Head and Cape Hatteras, N.C. are assisting in the search as well as crewmembers of the Chicamacomico Fire Department.
Anyone with information about this case should call the USCG 5th District Public Affairs @ (757) 398-6272.
