Obama's Real Secret: He's a Republican

Ezra Klein thinks we should look at his policies, not his birth certificate

(Newser) – Don’t listen to Donald Trump. Barack Obama is not a Socialist Kenyan Muslim. The truth is far more startling: He’s a moderate Republican from the 1990s, writes Ezra Klein of the Washington Post. Obama’s major policy ideas—mandate-based health care reform, cap-and-trade, and raising taxes to reduce the deficit—are all things that Republicans advocated back then, Klein observes. But now they’re running away from them, seemingly just to oppose Obama.

“The White House has shown a strong preference for policies with demonstrated Republican support,” Klein observes, “but that’s been obscured by the Republican Party adopting a stance of unified, occasionally hysterical, opposition (remember ‘death panels’?) … But as entertaining as reality-TV politics might be, it can’t be permitted to, ahem, trump reality itself.” The really interesting story here isn’t the origin of Obama—it’s the origin of his policies.

Whatever Obama is he's certainly no socialist. The so called Democrats have essentially given up on any sort of left wing platform such as socialized medicine having surrendered to the current bone-headed consensus that liberalism is bad. This is largely the result of the decline of organized labor as a funding source for the Democratic party. He also seems awfully friendly to wall street types considering how they only recently wrecked the banking system. The alternative will probably be worse considering the Republican party's penchant for nominating boneheads and illiterates. We need a new constitutional convention to reoranize the government into a unicameral parliamentary system where multiple parties would have a change of getting seats and the working majority could then actually rule with a prime minister instead of a phony king which is what the presidency has morphed into. Don't hold your breaths while waiting for all of this to happen.

If Obama proposed the Ryan budget, Republicans would still scream socialism.
