Fla. Tomatoes Recalled Over Salmonella

No illnesses reported, but sample tested positive

(AP) – A Florida tomato grower is voluntarily recalling its grape tomatoes after a sample tested positive for salmonella. Six L's Packing Company Inc. said in a statement today that no illnesses had been reported in connection to the recall as of April 29. The Immokalee, Fla.-based company says the recalled product was packed on April 11 under the Cherry Berry lot code DW-H in clam shells or 20-pound cardboard containers.

The tomatoes were distributed to California, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Florida, New Jersey, New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Georgia, as well as Canada. The tomatoes also were used in deli salads made by Tracy-based Taylor Farms Pacific Inc. The salads were sold in Albertsons, Raley's, Safeway, Savemart, Sam's Club and Walmart stores across the West and some Midwestern states.

(NEWSER) - Two months after salmonella-tainted tomatoes entered the food supply, the FDA has still not tracked down the source. Blame the label-free tomato with no bar codes to help investigators, reports AP. (NEWSER) - Bad news: That package of Jennie-O turkey burgers you bought because you were trying to be healthy just might be contaminated with salmonella. Worse news: The strain of salmonella in question is "resistant to many commonly prescribed antibiotics," the pleasantly-named Food Poison Journal reports. (AP) - Johnson & Johnson yesterday recalled several types of Rolaids antacids in the US because of reports of metal and wood particles in the products. The voluntary recall comes less than a month after the company issued a voluntary recall of Rolaids Extra Strength softchews. This time around, recalled products include those softchews, plus Rolaids Extra Strength plus Gas Softchews and Rolaids Multi-Symptom plus Anti-Gas Softchews. The company says the materials were potentially introduced into the products during the manufacturing process at an outside manufacturer. More»

(NEWSER) - Fisher-Price is staging the biggest recall of the year, recalling more than 10 million toys due to safety concerns. The more than 7 million tricycles being recalled have a plastic ignition key that sticks out and can cause genital bleeding, the AP reports .
