Padres' Peavy Bags NL Cy Young Award

Posted Nov 15, 07 3:28 PM CST in Sports

(Newser) – San Diego Padres all-star pitcher Jake Peavy bagged the National League Cy Young Award today, after unanimously receiving all 32 first place votes and racking up 160 points, 66 more than the runner-up. Peavy led the league this year with 240 strikeouts, 19 wins, and finished the season with an impressive 2.54 ERA, the Associated Press writes.

Besides Roger Clemens, Peavy is the only starting pitcher to win the Cy Young Award without pitching a single complete game. The prize brought Peavy a $100,000 contract bonus, as well as a potential salary jump in 2009, with San Diego's club option rising from $8 to $11 million. Arizona's Brandon Webb, who won last year, came in a distant second with 94 points, including 31 second-place votes.
