United Apologizes for Reusing 9/11 Flight Numbers

United Airlines flight numbers 93 and 175 will no longer be recycled

(AP) – United Airlines is apologizing after briefly restarting use of flight numbers of two of the doomed planes hijacked on Sept. 11, 2001. Flight numbers 93 and 175 have been removed from the airline's computer system after a United flight attendants' union objected to the reuse. The flight numbers probably went back into use just in the past few days, and a spokesman blames a technical error. United Flight 93 crashed in Shanksville, Pa., and Flight 175 hit the south tower of the World Trade Center.

I'm surprised it's not common practice for airlines to retire numbers of flights they've lost. The world is full of superstitious consumers. Why would they risk giving them a reason to shop elsewhere?

A poor choice of a headline image, don't you think? Ironic considering the nature of the story...

who cares? numbers. big freaking deal. let those planes fly unencumbered from the silliness of emotionality,  c'mon. they are not sacred, these numbers. they are numbers, flight numbers. 9/11 was years ago. get over it. if you can't than change the damned numbers from 93 to 94. and 175 to 176. or whatever.  we got attacked. the towers toppled and lives were lost. it is history. move on.
