Jeter a Cheater: New York State

Posted Nov 16, 07 4:08 PM CST in US Sports

(Newser) – Derek Jeter is spending the off-season denying he’s a Bronx Bomber. New York officials seeking back taxes from the Yankee—who files in Florida—have answered a judge’s demands to show the ballplayer is “immersed in the community.” If they can prove Jeter’s more a creature of Trump Tower than of Tampa, the Daily News reports, the shortstop may owe the Empire State millions.

The state points to “numerous public statements professing his love for New York" and says he “keeps items near and dear in his New York apartment.” Officials will be allowed to probe the superstar’s utility bills and to question his neighbors. His agent says Jeter "has great affection for the people of New York and its amazing fans" but lives in Tampa.
