(Newser) – Paul Pierce, in foul trouble most of the second half, dropped in a layup with 25 seconds left to give the Boston Celtics a 92-91 win over the Miami Heat, and his team their best start since 1972-73. Boston's new Big Three combined for 57 points while Miami's Dwyane Wade, in his first start this season, had 23 points.

The champs of 2005-06 have stumbled out of the gate at 1-8, with center Shaquille O'Neal appearing to be on the decline. Despite thos struggles, they fought back from 14 down with eight minutes to play to take the lead before Pierce's bucket. Rajon Rondo had nine points and 10 assists for Boston, which faces a stiff test Sunday against Orlando.
