Gay, Bisexual Teens Take More Risks

Gay and bisexual high school students more likely to drink, smoke

(AP) – Gay and bisexual high school students are more likely than their heterosexual classmates to smoke, drink alcohol or do other risky things, according to a CDC study released today. Investigators asked about dozens of risky behaviors, ranging from not wearing a bicycle helmet to drug use and suicide attempts. Based on anonymous surveys of 156,000 high school students, gay, lesbian, and bisexual students reported worse behavior in half to 90% of the risk categories.

Why? CDC officials don't know for sure, but said that gay, lesbian and bisexual students are likely to deal with stigma, disapproval, and social rejection. "Many risky behaviors are related to how people feel about themselves and the environment they're in," noted the study's lead author.

(NEWSER) - The gay teen who brought a stun gun to school to defend himself against bullies—then fired said gun into the air—is paying the piper: Arsenal Tech High School has expelled Darnell "Dynasty" Young, who now won't be allowed to finish his junior year, and will miss the first semester of his senior year, reports the Indianapolis Star . "I couldn’t believe that they did it," says mom Chelisa Grimes, who got Darnell the stun gun after she says school officials failed to respond to the family's complaints about bullying. California Moves to Ban 'Gay Cure' for Teens

'Conversion therapy' is dangerous, bill's sponsor says

(NEWSER) - Psychotherapists who claim they can "cure" gay teenagers may soon be out of business in California. A bill before the state Senate would ban so-called "conversion therapy" for minors and require adults to sign a release form stating that the counseling is ineffective and possibly dangerous, reports AP . Such treatments can "cause extreme depression and guilt" that sometimes lead to suicide, says the bill's sponsor, Democratic Sen. Ted Lieu. More»
