But UN rep won't say where Iman al-Obeidi will eventually end up

(Newser) – Iman al-Obeidi, the Libyan woman who made headlines when she claimed Moammar Gadhafi's troops raped her, is at a UN refugee center in Romania. Al-Obeidi had gone from Libya to Tunisia to Qatar, but was expelled from Qatar back to Benghazi on Thursday. A UN spokesperson confirmed that al-Obeidi arrived in Romania from Italy on Sunday, unaccompanied, but would not name her final destination.

"She will have the same treatment as other refugees: medical treatment, psychological counseling, and interviews with authorities from the country where she will be relocated," the spokesperson said. "It is a delicate case and I can't say more. She will leave Romania in a maximum of six months." Al-Obeidi's sister, however, said Sunday that al-Obeidi was in the process of being brought to the US. (NEWSER) - Five men, possibly including the son of a high-ranking police officer, have been arrested in Libya as part of a criminal investigation into the rape allegations made by Iman al-Obeidi. The Libyan woman made headlines yesterday when she burst into a Tripoli hotel to tell journalists she had been imprisoned, raped, and tortured by men connected to Moammar Gadhafi. (NEWSER) - A Libyan woman crashed the Tripoli hotel housing western journalists today, reports the New York Times, fighting past guards to tell reporters a story of horrific sexual assault at the hands of pro-Gadhafi forces. Iman al-Obeidy, a native of Benghazi, says she was detained at a checkpoint, and imprisoned and raped by 15 men. “They say that we are all Libyans and we are one people,” she said, displaying bruises and deep scratches. “But look at what the Gadhafi men did to me.” More»

Iman al-Obeidi gets asylum; told media Gadhafi forces assaulted her

(NEWSER) - The woman who burst into a media breakfast to say she’d been gang-raped by Moammar Gadhafi’s forces has arrived in the US, where she’s been granted asylum, CNN reports. Iman al-Obeidi flew into New York following 54 days in a UN refugee camp in Romania ; she then took another flight to her new US home. Saying she was excited to be here, al-Obedi thanked the government and Hillary Clinton and said she hoped someday to meet the secretary of state. More»
