For Fine Dining, Tokyo Reigns Supreme

Posted Nov 20, 07 10:25 AM CST in World Arts & Living

(Newser) – Paris has lost its crown as the world's leader in haute cuisine, reports the Telegraph, as the new Michelin guide to Tokyo showered the city's restaurants with acclaim. The first edition of the culinary bible awarded no fewer than 191 stars to 150 restaurants in the Japanese capital—nearly double Paris' 97 stars and triple New York's 54.

Michelin's undercover gastronomes, both Japanese and European, visited 1,500 restaurants in Tokyo in researching the new guide, which awarded eight restaurants the highest rating of three stars. In Paris, the food critic for Le Figaro welcomed the newcomer: "I don't take it as a slap in the face for French cuisine. Au contraire. At last we are not alone in the world!"
