San Francisco Wants to Make All Pet Sales Illegal

But even proponents see the proposal as symbolic

(Newser) – San Francisco's latest eyebrow-raising proposal isn't just about banning the sale of goldfish. It's about banning the sale of all pets, from birds to hamsters, to dogs and cats, to, yes, guppies. The plan floated by the Commission of Animal Control and Welfare has little chance of being approved by supervisors, but one advocate tells the Los Angeles Times it's more of a symbolic gesture to raise awareness. And the controversial proposal is clearly causing a buzz, just as it was intended to.

"For us as an organization, we've identified the larger problem of online purchasing of dogs, and we hope this is an avenue to get to that," says the co-president of the local SPCA. But she sees the point of including birds and fish. "There's a lot of cruelty around where they are sourced from. We see the cruelty." But pet store owners think the bill is plenty cruel toward their livelihoods. "The animal-rights activists are trying to drive a wedge any way they can in order to get a foothold on changing the ownership of animals," says one store owner. "They are about eliminating animals as pets."

A proposed ban on buying and selling pets in San Francisco has expanded to include pretty much any animal you are not eating.

this is kinda tough. i really don't like seeing animals, (excluding dogs or cats) cramed into cages, or aquariums (mice, gerbils, etc.) nor captive snakes or lizards. it is just not natural. it would seem to me that they would languish in captivity until someone came to BUY them. and if there are 15 to 20 mice who are going to buy them? a snake owner? just asking. aside from that, the pet stores in this area of sc have local shelters that hold adoptathons for dogs and cats. so as far as i can tell there are no dogs or cats sold out of them. (the pet shop business). my chihuahua mix moxie died a year ago this june. since sept. i have been looking for another for myself and my aging 13 yr. old fox terrier. over a week ago i did my usual search on petfinders. wow. i saw the little dog i wanted to adopt. he had been dropped off by his owner of 4 years at the shelter. who whould do such a thing? especially a 4 lb. dog? anyway i went back to his picture 3 4, 5 times a day. on the day of the adoptathon i was there 1/2 hr. early. i perused the pet shop. i looked at the mice etc. in aquariums. the finches, the parakeets and parrots. there just is no way that 20 mice are going to be adopted, or finches, or whatever. it just seems cruel to me. especially the lizards and snakes. too unatural. some animals are just not meant to be pets. but many people have the attitude that animals are disposable, expendable.  which is sad. harry the fox was adopted in '03 at age 5. he is now 13. my shep mix was gotten at 8 wks. and died at 16 1/2 yrs old. moxie the chi mix died at 13 suddenly. i did not ever give a dog up for convenience or inconvenience. my story has a happy ending. i adopted a little chi/mix at that adoptathon and brought him home. but to many others are wanting homes and a happy ending is not to be.

This stinks of PETA; they would have no animals in captivity.  They don't want bad people to have animals - but they don't want good people to have animals either.
