(Newser) – When a humpback whale’s tail swung over a small boat in Australia, it knocked a 13-year-old boy unconscious—but he survived the onslaught, the Daily Examiner reports. “I was sitting backwards in the boat looking at Drew and the tail just whacked him and sent him flying,” said his mother. The tail smashed the boat’s windshield, and when she made it over to her son, “I thought he was dead,” she said.

The boy had been fishing off the 5-yard-long boat. “It took about five minutes before we could get him to move or make a noise.” Drew was taken to the hospital, where doctors identified a broken collarbone as well as bumps on his chest and head.
