Bachmann Mixes Up John Wayne, John Wayne Gacy

Kicks off presidential campaign with historic blunder

(Newser) – John Wayne once said, "Talk low, talk slow, and don't say too much." It's advice Michele Bachmann might've been wise to heed today. The Tea Party congresswoman kicked off her presidential campaign today in her hometown of Waterloo, Iowa, with an emphasis on her roots. But Politico notes that in an interview she compared her spirit to that of actor John Wayne, also a Waterloo native. Except Waterloo's "John Wayne" is actually serial killer John Wayne Gacy. The actor is from Winterset, Iowa—three hours away.

Gacy was living in Waterloo when convicted for the first time, notes the Washington Times, over an attempted homosexual assault. After an 18-month sentence, he moved to Illinois, where he went on a six-year killing spree. In response, Bachmann's campaign was quick to point out, "John Wayne is from Iowa, his parents lived in Waterloo." Wayne's parents indeed met in Waterloo but moved to Winterset, where Wayne was born.

Famously posing for pictures with National Democrat dignitaries and officeholders, including First Lady Rosalyn Carter in 1976, prolific serial killer  John Wayne Gacy was an active supporter of the Democrat Party. He was a precinct captain in Norwood Park - a community organizer. John Wayne, on the other hand, supported his friend Ronald Reagan and was an active supporter of the Republican Party. The guns he shot in movies were loaded with blanks and he killed no one. John Wayne was born in Iowa, not very far from Waterloo, where his parents had lived. Ms. Bachmann did not refer to Gacy. The media did. Perhaps they forgot he was an Illinois community organizer, as well as a murderer of young boys. We still do not have 57 States and most 10 year old American boys know how to pronounce "corpsman", though few can read a teleprompter..

The actual headline of this story is: "Bachmann Mixes Up John Waynes' Birthplace With The Town John Wayne's Parents Lived In".  That's the real story. The "Gacy" part of the story was added by the media, unsupported by anything she actually said, then moved into the headline and piped around the world. Fortunately for Libs, focusing the attention on this phony, invented, non-story hides the real take-away lesson from Bachmann's speech: that the U.S. is in decline and Obama is leading that decline. This is definitely an idea they want to hide underneath a discussion of something else.
