Guy Pays $1 Parking Fine ... 35 Years Late

Stanley Baker sent the dollar in—despite not living in Florida, or knowing who got the ticket

(AP) – A Michigan man has paid a $1 Florida parking ticket more than 35 years overdue. Orlando police received Stanley Baker's payment for a Nov. 7, 1975, parking ticket yesterday. The 89-year-old Pentwater, Mich., man included a note reading, "Better late than never!"

Baker's son, Fritz Baker, says his father found the ticket in 1995—hiding in a used book—and eventually decided to pay the fine as a lark, even though it wasn't issued to him. Baker sent the $1 payment in the ticket's original envelope, which got it delivered to a police department auditorium that was a night and traffic court in 1975. Orlando's parking violations from 1975 have been destroyed, but a spokesman said the department got a chuckle.

(NEWSER) - Tonya Thomas shot her four children 18 times in Tuesday's massacre , and two of them were shot as the gun pressed against their chests, according to the medical examiner's report. She used jacketed, hollow-point bullets, which cause more damage than full-metal jacket rounds, and used a single Taurus .38-caliber revolver, which she would have had to reload three times. About 36 minutes passed from when the first shots were reported to 911 until the last shot was heard, Florida Today reports. Friend got a warning text from Tonya Thomas, didn't see it

(NEWSER) - A 33-year-old mother shot and killed her four kids, ages 12 to 17, before killing herself as police closed in on her home today, reports MSNBC . Police say they don't have a motive, but they say Tonya Thomas sent a text to a friend about 3am declaring that she wanted to be cremated with her children. The friend didn't see it in time, notes CNN . The shooting apparently started about 5am. The gunfire woke up a neighbor, who opened his door to find three of Thomas' children there, apparently fleeing. Thomas called them home, they obeyed, and she shot them. More»

(NEWSER) - Police in Florida investigating two skulls found in a backyard say that while they definitely have a mystery on their hands, they're not looking for a killer. That's because investigators have determined that the skulls belong to a man and a 10-year-old boy who died in Peru as far back as some 800 years ago, ABC reports. (NEWSER) - Unemployment benefits abruptly dried up for 236,300 people this weekend, as federal support for the long-term unemployed expired in some of the country's hardest-hit states. Thanks to a law Congress passed in February, long-term benefits are being scaled back from 99 weeks to 79 weeks, the Hill explains.
