Calls New York's gay marriage law 'very important'

(Newser) – Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel hopes that the land of Lincoln will follow New York's lead on gay marriage, reports Politico. “I would hope that the state would move in that direction,” said Emanuel. “Tremendous progress has been made across the country on a value statement. And I think that’s very important.” But Emanuel avoided criticizing President Obama's avoidance of endorsing all-out marriage for gay couples. “Whatever perspective I have, I’ll share with him,” Emanuel said.

(NEWSER) - A New York town clerk has quit her post so she won’t have to sign same-sex marriage licenses, which she objects to on religious grounds. “The Bible clearly teaches that God created marriage between male and female as a divine gift that preserves families and cultures,” Laura Fotusky wrote in her letter of resignation. (NEWSER) - An Illinois coalition of some 200 Methodist clergy has agreed to bless same-sex unions in defiance of church policy. Clergy members risk their jobs by doing so, but they’re urging the worldwide Methodist Church to limit punishment to a 24-hour suspension, reports the Chicago Tribune . (NEWSER) - After the showdown in Albany legalized gay marriage, euphoric crowds last night thronged the streets of New York City's West Village, where the gay rights movement was born some four decades ago. “It’s where it all began,” said one reveler outside the Stonewall Inn. The New York Times notes that the bill's passage coincides with Gay Pride weekend, and crowds assembled for a scheduled drag parade last night were buoyed by those looking to witness and celebrate history. “I really can’t really describe what this feels like, but it is one of the best feelings I have ever had in my life," said City Council speaker Christine Quinn, the city's highest-ranked openly gay official.
