USCG ends voyage for boating under the influence

(User Submitted) – NEW YORK – A boat operator was detained and his voyage terminated for boating under the influence of alcohol by a boarding team from Coast Guard Station Shinnecock, N.Y., Saturday, July 2, 2011.

While the Coast Guard boarding team was conducting a safety inspection on a 21-foot vessel in Moriches Bay, off Long Island, the vessel’s operator appeared intoxicated. He reportedly smelled of alcohol and was not complying with simple commands during the boarding. In addition, the boarding team found several empty alcoholic beverage containers aboard.

The boarding team brought the vessel back to the station and conducted a field sobriety test, which the boat operator failed. Suffolk County, N.Y., Marine Police arrived and took custody of the operator.
