1,400 California State Workers Paid $200K+

Some make more than half-a-million

(Newser) – State budget problems? What budget problems? That's what some 1,400 California state workers who pull in at least $200,000 a year are wondering. One prison doc earned a cool $777,000 last year, and a dentist collected $599,000. Most of the top paid workers are doctors, nurses, and dentists who work in the prison system, or medical professionals working for the state Department of Mental Health.

Some workers got huge lump sum payments last year for unused sick days, including a shrink who collected $595,000 after amassing 2.5 years of unused sick days, notes the Los Angeles Times. The chief of the state pension fund and head of the workers' compensation fund can each earn close to $600,000 a year. Their boss, Gov. Jerry Brown, earns $174,000 a year.

(NEWSER) - California Gov. Jerry Brown broke the bad news yesterday by YouTube : His state is facing a $16 billion deficit, not the $9.2 billion shortfall he had projected in January, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Brown blamed the budget gap on lower-than-expected tax receipts and the loss of spending cuts, which were blocked by court order and federal officials to protect the needy. Now, Brown says, the public had better support his ballot measure in November to boost taxes and raise $9 billion. More»

(NEWSER) - If Gov. Jerry Brown has his way, California's lawmakers will soon find themselves much less informed about pertinent topics like Australia's annual kangaroo harvest and the DOT's use of waste tires. Brown ordered that state agencies and departments be audited at the end of last year, and those audits turned up the kangaroo report (California's Department of Fish and Game is apparently tasked with tracking the data and providing it to lawmakers) along with 717 others Brown would like to deep-six in a bid to cut down on waste, reports the Sacramento Bee . (NEWSER) - California Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a bill banning the open carrying of handguns in public, he announced today. Police had opposed existing rules allowing Californians to carry unloaded guns openly, saying the practice scared onlookers, Politico reports. "As law enforcement officials tell me, it’s not safe and someone is going to get hurt," said the assemblyman who introduced the bill. Added Brown: "I listened to the California police chiefs." More»

Calif. Bans Circumcision Bans

Assemblyman boasts he's protecting 'parental rights'

(NEWSER) - The state of California has snipped San Francisco's uppity bid to erect a ban on circumcision. Any such ban is now banned in a law signed by Gov. Jerry Brown. Ban backers had collected nearly 8,000 signatures to put the measure to a vote in the city in November, arguing that circumcision is unnecessary surgery that can be dangerous. The issue was pretty much moot, even before the new state law, because a judge had already blocked the ballot measure that stirred controversy among Jews, Muslims, and many in the medical community. The state law was introduced by Democratic Assemblyman Mike Gatto, who told the Los Angeles Times that the measure, signed yesterday, would "protect parental rights and liberties." More»
