(NEWSER) - A snowboarding accident at a closed resort in Utah has claimed the life of pro skier Jamie Pierre. The 38-year-old extreme athlete and a friend were on a steep slope at the Snowbird Resort—which doesn't open until next weekend and hasn't cleared the slopes of danger—when he triggered an avalanche that swept him over a cliff. Helmets required for anyone under 18, and ski areas would be responsible

(NEWSER) - Two bills making their way through the California legislature would give the state the strictest US regulations governing helmet use while skiing or snowboarding, and dramatically shift responsibility onto resort operators. The first bill would require anyone under 18 to strap on head protection, and subject parents to a $25 fine if they don’t. That bill has at least middling industry support—apparently because the other bill is so draconian. More»

Athletes left to fund themselves on eve of Vancouver Games

(NEWSER) - The governing body for Britain's skiiers and snowboarders has gone bust just before the Vancouver Olympics. Athletes now in Vancouver have been forced to fund themselves as UK Olympic officials scramble to find cash from sponsors and private donors to cover the team's costs. Organizers complain that the London 2012 Olympics have vastly overshadowed winter sports, which were already underfunded. More»

Vancouver has already made 21 million gallons of snow, just in case

(NEWSER) - Continued warm weather in Vancouver, which will host the Winter Olympics in less than a month, has led to a massive snowmaking effort and a bit of anxiety. Cypress Mountain, one of four outdoor venues used in the Games, has been closed early to “protect the integrity of the snowboarding and freestyle skiing courses,” and 21 million gallons of water have already been converted into mounds of stockpiled snow. First all-weather slope 'of its kind in North America'

(NEWSER) - Virginia’s Liberty University presented its new synthetic ski slope—the first in North America—this weekend with extreme performances from pro skiers and snowboarders. The chancellor of the Christian university, Jerry Falwell, showed off his own moves after paying tribute to his dad, the late Rev. Jerry Falwell, who wanted the ski slope to bring more students to the school “and, ultimately, bring more people to Christ,” writes the Lynchburg News and Advance. More»
