(Newser) – Priest Holmes's remarkable return to football ended with a whimper as he announced his second retirement, reports the Kansas City Star. Holmes, whose career initially ended two years ago due to neck injury, experienced tingling and numbness in last Sunday's game against Indianapolis; doctors subsequently advised him to hang up his cleats.

ESPN cited a source close to Holmes: "This has been a cumulative thing. It wasn't just the incident in the 2005 game with San Diego, but rather a succession of hits. From a life's standpoint, Priest will be fine. He just knows he can't play football anymore."
