Apple unveiled its latest version of the MacBook Air yesterday, and it’s a beauty. The new machine runs the Lion OS, sports either a Core i5 or Core i7 processor, and has such bells and whistles as a backlit keyboard and a Thunderbolt port, the Christian Science Monitor reports. And it’s all wrapped in a laptop that weighs either 2.38 pounds (for the 11-inch model) or 3 pounds (for the 13-inch model) and costs as little as $999.

But as Apple giveth, Apple taketh away: The debut marks the departure of the plain ‘ol MacBook, Apple’s previous entry-level machine. Apple aficionados will now have to pick between the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro. Still, that might not be the worst fate. Early reviews for the new device are overwhelmingly positive. “The 11-inch MacBook Air is the best laptop I’ve ever owned,” raves Joel Evans of ZDNet. “All of the negatives that I expected were quickly turned to positives.” (More MacBook Air stories.)
