Republicans already have wrung impressive concessions from President Obama in the debt ceiling talks, writes former senator and one-time presidential candidate Fred Thompson. Might they get more? Possibly, but it's not the worth the risk of default to find out. "I respectfully suggest that you rake in your chips, stuff them in your pockets, and tell the dealer to deal the next hand," writes Thompson at the National Review.

At that point, it will become apparent that "fiscally conservative principles" have won the day "and set us on the right path for our country’s long, necessary journey." He refers to Obama as a "doctrinaire liberal" who has resorted to "demagoguery" and will emerge from the fight "politically diminished." Republicans, on the other hand, "have laid some great groundwork" on entitlement and tax reform. "Now it is the time to accept a well-won victory and move on." Full column here. (A new poll finds voters getting fed up with both parties on the economy.)
