A diver brings cocaine from the scuttled drug sub to the surface.   (US Coast Guard)

(Newser) – The Coast Guard, working with FBI dive teams and the Honduran navy, has recovered 7.5 tons of cocaine worth $180 million from a drug submarine scuttled by smugglers off the coast of Honduras. The interception and seizure is the first of its kind in the Caribbean, the Miami Herald reports. Similar subs, built in jungle workshops by Colombian smugglers and designed to sink quickly when law enforcement is detected, have been stopped along Central America's Pacific coast.

The five smugglers, Columbian and Honduran nationals who attempted to escape in a life raft as the Coast Guard moved in, were arrested and are now in detention in Florida. It took dive teams nearly two weeks to locate the sub and remove the cocaine. The chief of the Honduran armed forces called the interception "the biggest blow to drug trafficking” in his country's history.

Cocaine only cost $750/oz? I thought it was much more expensive. Killer weed cost about $400/oz.

In this age of modern technology, as we know it, the users of said drugs can just set up a paypal accountand order their drugs via UPS or Fed Ex. over a secured site over the internet. It would save the cartels the expense of building submarines or tunneling under our border. More people will get their drugs much cheaper after having cut out the pimps and cartel's middlemen. Cartels would be legitimized, paying their export and import taxes, pay the Mexican government their share of Mordida (bite) and simply smile all the way to the bank. Killings will be a thing of the past. Hollywood will be dancing. There will be a super party in Washington. A real cause for the biggest Cocaine party ever. Comparable to an Oscars party. More people will start using drugs and feel good about the wholesome senario. Who would we find there? Hmmmmm. I'm too far gone to start, I am a marketer, I just bring in the ideas. The cartels should budget their spending for lobbyist in Washington...and Washington should be abreast of what's coming. It is a simple formula in the accounting world. Supply and Demand.
