Apes did not just take over our fictional world, they conquered our box office, too. Thanks to strong word-of-mouth and great reviews, Rise of the Planet of the Apes scored an unexpectedly strong opening weekend of $54 million—nearly $20 million better than the best forecast, says the Hollywood Reporter. Despite a relatively small international opening—25 markets, including just four majors, Spain, Russia, Australia, and Taiwan—Rise also pulled in $23.4 million overseas.
