(Newser) – With their leader locked up until after his 100th birthday, his devoted followers in the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints are turning to the next best thing: A 38-foot-tall statue of Warren Jeffs. Members of the polygamist sect are secretly assembling a colossal metal statue of Jeffs which will tower over the group's compound on the Utah/Arizona border when it is completed, according to the Daily Beast, which cites "a trusted source."

The sect believes the statue is "a way of showing that they can’t take him away from us," the source says. Jeffs, sentenced to life for sexually assaulting two underage "wives," is expected to continue leading the sect from prison. Ex-FLDS members who live near the compound aren't happy about the prospect of having a giant Jeffs looming over them. "Remember what happened to Saddam Hussein’s statue. That same thing will happen to this one," says a former Jeffs bodyguard who quit after seeing the evidence against him.

The FLDS is planning to erect a statue of Jeffs as tall as a 3-story building, a source says.
